Why are textbooks so boring?

Friday, January 21st, 2005

Why textbooks suck so much. I knew self-censorship existed and has been a major part of the process, but I didn’t know _how_.

I’m not sure I agree that the answer to the problem is breaking up the publishing monopolies, but maybe if nonadoption states banded together…. sigh. What a clusterfuck.

DJ Spooky’s “Rebirth of a Nation”

OMFG: Just got back from “Rebirth of a Nation” at the Power Center, the first true use of multimedia I’ve ever experienced (and I’ve been looking for about 10 years).

He took the movie Birth of a Nation, the rather sinister masterpiece from 1916, remixed it (heavy video editing and I guess you could call it VJ’ing though that sounds retarded, lets just say he was mixing video), added his own blues inspired modern audio mix…

Three projected screens, with spinemassaging bass.

Was _very_ strange to be offered earplugs at a concert. Is this type of music that normal now?

At any rate, a little in awe at the moment. I’ve toyed a bit with music mixing, and I’m not sure how he did what he did. I need to read up, seems I was wrong about what was possible with the technology….

Back after a break

Not much to write about lately. I’m beginning to find a new hatred for snow. :-)

Saw this on fark — http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/usatoday/20050107/ts_usatoday/whitehousepaidcommentatortopromotelaw

Armstrong Williams, a “prominent” black pundit (never heard of him) was paid $240,000 to promote No Child Left Behind.

He’s some kind of TV and radio guy, must not be syndicated in my area, or I just haven’t heard of him before — but this is just sick.

The system is broke.
