Bin Laden’s tape

Saturday, October 30th, 2004

Wow. One would think this will help el presidente, but man, if you actually read the transcript….

“It never occurred to us that the commander in chief of the American armed forces will leave 50,000 of his citizens in the two towers to face these horrors alone.

It appeared to him (Bush) that a little girl’s talk about her goat and its butting was more important than the planes and their butting of the skyscrapers.”

Oofin.

Good OLAP article

Saw this on Rittman’s blog: http://www.rittman.net/archives/001113.html

He does a damn good job — maybe no Tom Kyte, but he’s good. :-)

How do you spell arrogance?

Bush signs a $140 bn tax break for corporations.

*WOW*

He’s got some brass ones. Kerry better take him to task for this one. Tax cuts are great when you can afford them, but in a time of war? What the…? To multinational corps and the tobacco industry?

More Nov 2 ballot

Thursday, October 21st, 2004

Just going to link to crcmich.org, the citizens research council. I need to read up a bit about where their biases lie, but since they’re linked from sospublius.org (where I found my ballot, linked in from michigan.gov)….I feel somewhat safe linking them in.

Statewide: Proposal 1

Pretty detailed information here. I’m still digesting.

Statewide:Proposal 2

This proposal would: Amend the state constitution to provide that “the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose.”

Need to read some more, but it looks like this bill isn’t necessary for it’s purpose and far to strongly worded.

In 1996, the state of Michigan define marriage as:

“inherently a unique relationship between a man and a woman. As a matter of public policy, this state has a special interest in encouraging, supporting, and protecting that unique relationship in order to promote, among other goals, the stability and welfare of society and its children. A marriage contracted between individuals of the same sex is invalid in this state”

So what’s the point of Proposal 2? As far as I can see it, this is an attempt to bar any govt funded entity from giving any benfiits to same sex couples.

I’m not a lawyer, but I am a voter. This legislation is NOT necessary, and worded in such a way to confuse people. I hate that. If you want a law to ban benefits to same sex couples, write a law about that — not this restatement of existing laws with “for any purpose” tacked onto the end.

County: Parks and rec proposal A.

More money for parks, or as it says in the proposal, renew the increase in the tax limitation. At least I think that’s a tax increase.

County: WCC millage restoration

.85 millage increase for 10 years for WCC. I don’t have a problem with this, as WCC looks like a pretty successful operation that knows how to spend well (’cept for that
Banner implementation….)

City: Ann Arbor Proposal C
This pretty much decriminalizes pot in AA, at least if you can get a doctors note. I don’t have a problem with the concept, but look at how it’s worded:

“Shall section 16.2 of the Charter be amended to require waiver of fines and costs upon proof that the defendant has a recommendation of a physician, practitioner or other qualified health professional to use or provide marijuana or cannabis for medical treatment; to prohibit Ann Arbor police officers from complaining, and the city attorney from referring any complaint, of the possession, use, giving away, sale or cultivation of marijuana upon proof of such recommendation; to prohibit other punitive or rehabilitative measures; to establish an affirmative defense; and to set the fine for third and subsequent offenses at $100?”

The “proof of such recommendation” that’s mentioned in the snippet is a doctor’s note. Problem #1 — the police can’t complain? Problem #2 – How can you legalize giving the stuff away or the sale of it? If this is about medical use, it should include strongger verbage to that end. That said, who wouldn’t vote yes on this?

Again, I like the idea, but I don’t see how this particular amendment to the city charter is going to pass. I just don’t see it.

Thoughts on my Nov 2 Ballot

Thursday, October 21st, 2004

So if you go to Michigan.gov and click on “Michigan Votes” you’re taken to sospublius.com, where I can see what my ballot will look like on Nov 2. Very cool.

Yet another confusing proposal 1 is on the tube right now, I have no idea what the hell that proposal is, other than it involves gambling and about a hundred million dollars in ads on both sides of the issue — odd that both the “vote yes on 1″ and “vote no on 1″ ads suggest they will help give us more control over gambling in the state…

Not sure I’ll get through the entire ballot tonight, and I’m not posting what I’m voting for, just what I think (well, I am voting for Kerry, Dingell, and possibly Scotty Boman, but other than that it’s a mystery).

President – Kerry
15th District Rep in US Congress: Dingell

53rd District State Rep: Choices are Sheagren (Repub) or Kolb (Dem) Who the hell are these guys? I don’t think I’ve seen a Shegren sign, I know I’ve seen Kolb.

Well, the Ann Arbor news says here that Sheagren is backed by the NRA and the Citizens for traditional values. Why do I have to go to the Ann Arbor news? Cause the guy doesn’t have a freaking website. Bah.

Sheesh, Kolb doesn’t have a website either — other than those provided by the state and his party (Sheagren doesn’t even have that). Also, Kolb graduated from Huron in 1976 and was inducted into the Huron hall of fame in 2004.

Member of the State Board of Education
Member of the UofM Board of Regents
Member of the MSU Board of Trustees
Member of the WSU Board of Govenors
WCC Trustees

Other than the EMU board of regents (which are appointed), I’m not sure I’m comfortable even thinking of voting for the head of academic institutions — and yes, I would love to vote to decide who is an EMU regent….though from my experience at EMU I know that appointed regents are just as political as those running in elections…

I admit I might just have to vote for Scotty Boman of the Libertarian party for State board of education. He found ways to get the most out of Federov without him leaving town — oh wait, that’s Boman, not Bowman. Dunno.

Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attourney – Stanowski (Repub) or Mackie (Democrat) Well, Mackie is the incumbent, and currently Washtenaw county doesn’t do enough about juvenile crime.

Only one choice for Sherrif, Treasurer, Drain Commish, County Commish, 22nd circut judge, and 15th district judge.

Washtenaw County Clerk – Peggy Haines (Repub) or Lawrence Kastenbaum (Dem). Well, Kastenbaum at least has a website, Haines doesn’t have one. From Kastenbaum’s site I can see that he has a lot of endoursements, but not much experience. Haines has had the job, but what has she done? I have no idea.

Ann Arbor Mayor – Jane Lumm (Repub) or John Hieftje (Dem). Neither have websites. Way to go folks. How am I supposed to know you? Where’s your blog? Hieftje is the incumbent — has he done anything? Well, Hieftje is trying to keep the place clean.

Justice of the supreme court – Pick two of: Marilyn Kelly, Leo Schwartz, Brian Zahra…oh and Steve Markman and Deb Thomas. Don’t know much about the last two. Kelly’s website is pretty spiffy looking. Will have to read up some — state supreme court is pretty important, or so I learned watching the Florida debacle in 2000.

Ann Arbor City Council, Ward 3, pick two: Jean Carlberg (Democrat), Marc Reichardt (Green), and Rich Birkett (Libertarian). I linked in the finance websites for each candidate cause they don’t have websites. Bah.

Next update will be the proposals.

Go Sox!

Notes on recovery using an online backup…

Friday, October 15th, 2004

Configuring backup and recovery for our new portal database server. Management wants it as close to 24/7 as possible, so I’m configuring it to use online (hot) backups.

Using the BCV’s the tablespaces should only be in backup mode for about 2 minutes, probably a lot less, so very little redo will be generated. I have it set to switch logfiles right after the tablespaces come out of backup mode…

So, to use the backup files to recover to the point just after the backup was taken…here’s the recipe I used to restore to a seperate server.

Requirements:
– All dbf files from the backup (you can skip temp tho)
– The output of alter database backup controlfile to trace
– Patience
– The server set up to handle things (adding things to the oratab, setting up the initSID.ora)
– The archive log from the switch just after the backup.

So what you don’t need: redo logs, control files, temp file.

Once all dbf’s are in place, run the second part of the output from the backup controlfile. Once the controlfiles are created, check the status of the tablespaces using (select status from v$datafile). They will all be in system or recovery mode.

At this point we need to apply the redo that’s stored in the archive log from the switch. Do the following: “RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE until cancel;”

Only apply the first archive log (yeah, that’s only true for this particular case, I would probably recommend a point in time recovery for most other situations…anyhow…), then cancel out.

After you get the media recovery cancelled message, do an “alter database open resetlogs”, if it comes back with “database altered”, wow, you got lucky.

Once you figure that out, you’ll need to recreate the tempfile, see the backup of the controlfile for what the settings should be on that tempspace.

Lessons learned:

If you don’t cancel out of the “recover database using…” step, it’s going to keep asking for archive logs indefinitley. You need to get the system to a sane point, and then cut it.

Remember, doing a reset logs is a very decisive step. Once you’ve done it, you’re either good to go or you’re going to start over…

Got more help with the production problem than on anything I’ve worked on in the past two years. Very happy. Very.

Also, check out this smoking gun article on a sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill Orielly. It’s a classic: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/1013043mackris1.html

Sooo…you know you’ve had a bad day when…

Monday, October 11th, 2004

Got a call from a user today, she was almost in tears — which I found odd, cause this wasn’t one of those users who will start up the waterworks to get her way. That’s kind of sexist — let me qualify that with a comment that I’ve seen the ol’ man-cry bit more times than I’d care to admit.

Anyhow, something very very very bad happened in our production database. Without going into details that could get me into trouble, let’s just call this a showstopper.

Ugh. I think I can get us past it without too much trouble, I just wish there were other folks here willing to share some of the burden. I’m going to do my best to force peoples hands, make them as responsible for resolving the issue as I am.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN

Monday, October 11th, 2004

(I didn’t write this, but find it entertaining — and by posting it here I’m avoiding the shame of flooding people with emails).

Joe gets up at 6 am and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.

With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It’s noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

WEWT!

My blog was spammed. Someone left a few comments, linked back to some crappy porno blog. I think the goal was to drive up traffic to their site.

Whoever it was left the comment “huh.. wrong page”. The comments have been deleted, but it’s still kinda funny.

If it continues, I can force each comment to be approved before it’s displayed on the site.

Cheney/Edwards debate

Wednesday, October 6th, 2004

Hell of a debate. Possibly the best I’ve seen, and the toughest.

“I’ve not suggested there’s a connection between Iraq and 9/11″. – Cheney

He actually said that…

Other than that titanic lie, Cheney was at his absolute best. Edwards looked roughed up at times, but he held his own.

Get out that wallet

Friday, October 1st, 2004

John Kerry needs _MY_ help to defeat ol’ George. Or that’s what they tell me on JohnKerry.com.

In fact, I signed up as a volunteer on their site. Before I broke my leg I’d be more inclined to help them physically, so I broke open my wallet.

Anyhow, any contributions made on this site: https://volunteer.johnkerry.com/mysite/?ref=913836 get me points. I haven’t figured out what the points do yet. The republican “team leader” site has a similar concept, but much more polished (you can turn your points in for swag). Who knows — maybe johnkerry points turn into cabinet positions or choice diplomat missions or a free pardon for whatever you want… (thems the real spoils).

Watched part of the debate before Liam and his friend took over the tv. Bush looked squemish and short. Kerry was talking in recursive loops, and didn’t address the camera enough. All in all, a waste of time, especially for a four year old.

7 more days till I’m free. Well, 7 days and 2.5 hours.
